SQ7 or Wing? Choosing Between Allen & Heath and Behringer

Allen and Heath SQ Plus Digital Audio Console

For over a decade, the Behringer X32 has been a church staple, thanks to its powerful features and budget-friendly price. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re part of one of those churches—and now, the time has come. You’ve outgrown your X32 (which will likely be handed off to the youth ministry), and you’re looking to upgrade. The big question is: do you stick with Behringer and go with the Behringer Wing, or do you make the jump to Allen & Heath’s SQ7?

Most Roads Lead to Allen & Heath’s SQ7

The Allen & Heath SQ7 outperforms the Behringer Wing in sound quality. Its 96kHz FPGA-based processing delivers superior resolution and clarity compared to the Wing’s 48kHz processing, retaining more detail in the audio signal, especially in high frequencies, for a crisper, more defined output noticeable in premium PA systems or clean acoustic settings. The SQ7’s mic preamps are renowned for their transparency and low noise. Additionally, the SQ7 offers a sturdier build and a streamlined workflow with intuitive, well-organized physical controls.

Important Things to Note

  • Despite being from the same company, Behringer’s Wing presents a significant learning curve for X32 users.
  • The Wing’s highly flexible design may suit advanced users but can overwhelm beginners.
  • While some users report challenges with Behringer’s support, Allen & Heath is consistently praised for its responsive and reliable customer service

When to Choose a Behringer Wing

If you’re already heavily invested in the Behringer/Midas ecosystem, not having to purchase new stage boxes would provide significant savings with the Wing. It would likely be worth it value-wise to stay with Behringer.

The Third Option

Springtree is committed to responsible stewardship. If your current system is meeting your needs, upgrading may not be necessary. If the X32’s 32 channels, 8 DCAs, and effects cover your demands, and you don’t require more advanced features—especially with volunteers already proficient with the X32—there’s no strong case for an upgrade.
